Once we’ve defined your ULD’s concept, we produce a technical design proposal and a quote – without any obligation to purchase. A technical proposal contains all the design specifications and drawings of your ULD, including dimensions, weight, materials, certification, construction methods and special features.
Once you’ve accepted the design and quote, we move onto the development stage. This is all about finding ways to improve the ULD itself and its production. Can we make it more lightweight? Can we make it fire-resistant or theft-proof? How do we make loading easier? What’s the best way to streamline our production process?
New ideas and continuous improvement play an essential role in staying ahead of our competitors and in meeting our customers’ needs. That’s why we collaborate with universities and research organisations, take part in various industry and regulatory meetings, and visit trade fairs.
During the engineering stage, we work out in detail all aspects of the ULD to ensure it meets your requirements and those of the aviation industry. Aspects include operating parameters, external dimensions, material and maintenance requirements, design life and external marking. The more complex the ULD, the more complex the engineering stage.
Our engineering team’s vast experience and knowledge result in not only detailed product specifications but also efficient production processes. 3D software is used to visualise and define the design to its last detail, while 3D models are used to review and approve the design, determine the ULD’s weight and set up technical drawings for production.
The ULD’s design is also optimised at this stage by calculating stress and displacement using the FEA/FEM method. This helps us reduce volume and weight without reducing quality, for example, and determine if the ULD is safe to use and fit for purpose.
Generally, all our ULDs are certified for continued airworthiness by the relevant Civil Aviation Authority (e.g. EASA and FAA) to ensure they won’t endanger flight safety or damage the aircraft.
The certification process is a rigorous one, and any company that wants to manufacture ULDs has to meet the highest standards. So our first step in developing and producing ULDs is getting design & production organisation approval (APDOA & POA).
With a Alternative Procedures to DOA & POA in hand, we can submit ULD designs to the relevant authority for approval as an airworthy product. If approval is not given, we have go back to the drawing board - literally.
We’re particularly good in getting ULDs certified due to our stress analysis/calculations (FEA/FEM), product and industry knowledge, advanced software and testing capabilities. That’s essential for a company that creates custom ULDs.
Once your ULD design has been certified, our highly skilled technicians begin manufacturing it – whether it’s a one-off or a series – using state-of-the-art machinery.
In order to be flexible, eliminate waste, implement continuous improvement and build in quality to the entire process, we employ lean manufacturing principles and have access to a well-developed supply chain.
We also adopt flexible production methods, which are particularly suited to producing small sets of products, so we can react to predicted and unpredicted changes.
